New Zealand – Investigation Reports

On this page we have listed a number of investigation reports by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission. The investigation reports may provide readers with a better understanding of any relevant judgments that are consequently handed down.

The mandate of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) can be found in section 4 of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission Act 1990;

“The principal purpose of the Commission shall be to determine the circumstances and causes of accident and incidents with a view to avoiding similar occurrences in the future, rather than to ascribe blame to any person.”

The TAIC consider all rail accidents, marine accidents and aviation accidents and determine whether the accident satisfies section 13(1)(b) TAIC Act 1990;

“…that the Commission shall investigate all accidents if… the Commission believes that the circumstances of the accident or incident have, or are likely to have, significant implications for transport safety, or may allow the Commission to establish findings or make recommendations which may increase transport safety”.
